Plans come together to improve local transportation

Seven new projects are under consideration as part of the Superior Transportation Improvement Program for 2021-2024.

The plan sets the schedules for improvements to the greater Superior-area transportation program and is required by the U.S. Department of Transportation to make projects eligible for federal funding.

In addition to the seven road projects, the plan includes two railroad projects and transit-related activities, said Sheldon Johnson, director of Northwest Regional Planning Commission.

The railroad projects are expected to cost $100,000 and will install gates and signals at highway rail crossings on East Fifth Street in Superior and County Highway C in Douglas County.

Three of the projects included in the plan take place in Douglas County in 2021, Johnson said. One Douglas County project is planned for each year in 2022 and 2023. The remaining projects are in Superior and will take place in 2024.

Woman dies after car hits tree in horror crash as man fights for life

A woman has died after a car smashed into a tree in a horror crash.

The 75-year-old was travelling in a Nissan Juke on Aigburth Road on Sunday, when the car hit the tree trunk on the central reservation.

Paramedics, police officers and fire fighters attended the scene after reports of a collision at 6.40pm.

A helicopter from the North West Air Ambulance Service also attended the scene, landing on the pitch at a nearby cricket club.

The woman, along with three other occupants of the car were rushed to hospital.

She was sadly pronounced dead in hospital.

Her family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
