If you’re using Android Auto for the first time, here are some steps to get started:

Android Auto on your phone screen

1. Prepare your phone

  1. Make sure your phone is running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and up. For best performance, we recommend Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and up.
  2. If you are using Android 9 or lower, download the Android Auto app from Google Play. If you are on Android 10, please follow the instructions here.
  3. Make sure your phone has a strong and fast network connection. We recommend running Android Auto for the first time within Wi-Fi range for the fastest installation.

2. Start Android Auto

  1. On Android 9 or below, open Android Auto. On Android 10, open Android Auto for Phone Screens.
  2. Your phone might ask you to download or update certain apps, like Google Maps.
  3. Review the Safety Notice and Terms & Conditions on your phone (only required the first time you use the app).
  4. Follow the steps on the screen to give Android Auto permission to access your phone’s features and apps. For the best experience, accept all permissions and requests.
  5. Turn on notifications for Android Auto. For the best experience, we recommend accepting all requests.
  6. If your phone is already paired with your car or mount’s Bluetooth, select the device to enable auto launch for Android Auto.

Android Auto on your car display (with a USB cable)

1. Prepare your phone and car

  1. Make sure your phone is running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and up. For best performance, we recommend Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and up.
  2. Confirm that your car is compatible with Android Auto and that Android Auto is turned on in your car’s settings. If you’re not sure, contact your local car dealer.
  3. Make sure your phone has a strong and fast network connection. We recommend running Android Auto for the first time within Wi-Fi range for the fastest installation.
  4. Download the Android Auto app from Google Play, or just plug your phone into a compatible car with a USB cable and you’ll be prompted to download the app. If you’re on Android 10 or higher, Android Auto is already included on your phone.

2. Connect your phone

Before you connect your phone for the first time, turn on your car. Make sure your car is in park (P) and that you have time to set up Android Auto. 

  1. Unlock your phone’s screen.
  2. Pair your phone and car via bluetooth. 
  3. Your phone might ask you to download or update certain apps, like Google Maps.
  4. Review the Safety Information and Android Auto permissions to access your apps.
  5. Turn on notifications for Android Auto. For the best experience, we recommend accepting all requests.

Your phone’s Bluetooth will be turned on automatically when Android Auto is connected to the car via USB.

3. Start Android Auto

On your car display, select Android Auto Android Auto. Follow the instructions to get started.

Android Auto on your car display (wireless)

1. Prepare your phone and car

  1. Make sure your phone meets the minimum requirements.
  2. Confirm that your car is compatible with Android Auto Wireless and that Android Auto is turned on in your car’s settings. If you’re not sure, contact your local car dealer.
  3. Ensure your phone has a strong and fast cellular data connection. 

2. Connect your phone

The first time you connect your phone to the car, you are required to pair your phone and car via Bluetooth. Make sure to turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone. Turn on your car. Make sure your car is in park (P) and that you have time to set up Android Auto.

  1. Unlock your phone’s screen.
  2. Pair your phone and car via bluetooth. 
  3. Your phone might ask you to download or update certain apps, like Google Maps.
  4. Review the Safety Information and Android Auto permissions to access your apps.
  5. Turn on notifications for Android Auto. For the best experience, we recommend accepting all requests.

 

3. Start Android Auto

On your car display, select Android AutoAndroid Auto. Wireless connection might take a few seconds to start.

If the projection doesn’t start with phone while your car is connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, go to the home screen of your car display. To start the projection, tap Android Auto Android Auto.
