Electric bicycle sales are higher than ever, but it’s created a new problem

While the COVID-19 pandemic shook the world and the e-bike industry with it, the pandemic also led to a huge surge in electric bicycle sales.

Nearly every company that offered electric bicycles soon found themselves with empty shelves and warehouses.

Between people being at home with more time on their hands, riders exiting lockdowns and itching to spend more time outdoors, and commuters looking for socially distant ways to get to work while avoiding public transportation, e-bike sales have never been higher.

But now that’s created a new problem in the industry: supporting all of those customers.

Large e-bike companies who count their customer base in the thousands and tens of thousands were already tasked with managing a carefully orchestrated customer service balance.

But now those systems have been pushed past the breaking point as countless new riders receive bike boxes at their doorstep, a small portion of which inevitably

Pedego Element launched as company’s lowest priced electric bike ever

Pedego’s most popular electric bicycle models usually fall in the $3,000+ range, but the company’s newest e-bike is priced at just half of those figures. Rolling into bike shops today, the Pedego Element is a shot across the bow of the major value-oriented e-bike companies.

Pedego Element e-bike launched

The Pedego Element is listed at just $1,495, which is pricing territory currently dominated by rival Rad Power Bikes.

But Pedego is hoping that its network of over 120 retail locations in the US will give it a leg up in this new market.

That advantage could be important, especially since the specs don’t necessarily place the Pedego Element above and beyond other offerings in the field.

As a Class 2 e-bike, the Pedego Element includes both a hand throttle and pedal assist, with both offering a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h).

Lunaz 300-mile electric drive sparks new life into classic Rolls-Royces

To ensure that future generations never want for the timeless style of generations past, Lunaz has launched ahead with its all-electric Rolls-Royce restomods. Rarely are we surprised these days at classic cars electrified to modern-day standards, but the proposition of packing all-electric power below the hulking, voluptously-flanked bodies of 1960s-era Rolls-Royces was quite unexpected. The all-electric Rolls-Royce Phantom V is more than just a showpiece, packing enough power and range for practical on-road touring, whether driven by its owner or their personal chauffeur.

We saw a sneak peek of Lunaz’s past-reviving electric future last October, and last week the company announced the official start of production on 30 planned fully electrified Rolls-Royce restomods. The models will include classic Phantoms and Silver Clouds in various body styles, from four-door limousines to drophead coupes.

Number one of 30 is a thoroughly modernized 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V. The painstaking process behind this car,

Global electric vehicle cords top 1 million

Kyle Stock, Bloomberg
Published 10:07 a.m. ET Aug. 5, 2020 | Updated 4:49 p.m. ET Aug. 5, 2020

The electric vehicle industry has quietly hit one of its biggest milestones to date, as the number of public charging plugs around the world ticks above the 1 million mark.

The options for juicing up a car that runs on electrons crossed the seven-figure threshold sometime in May, having doubled in just three years, according to the recent tally by BloombergNEF.

Most of the new infrastructure has been built in China and Europe. North America, with far less robust public subsidy and support, remains a distant third in the charging race, though there is some hope that a pandemic stimulus plan will catalyze a new wave of construction.
