TSTC student gains hands-on skills in Automotive Technology program

Rey Rocha has always had an interest in gears, transmissions and engines.

Now he is gearing up to receive his Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology from Texas State Technical College this fall, and he already has a full-time job lined up.

Rocha is currently working part time at Boggus Ford in Harlingen through TSTC’s cooperative education program as a technician’s assistant, an opportunity that will transition to full time after he graduates this fall.

“I chose to study automotive technology because I have an interest in the theory and combined systems that come together and make the modern vehicle,” Rocha said. “I like using tools and dexterity to accomplish a job.”

The accomplishment he feels after completing a vehicle repair is what drives him to continue to thrive in the field.

KDOT offers new transportation technology funding

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Department of Transportation has made new transportation program funding available.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says projects that promote safety, improve access or mobility and update transportation technology can now receive financial assistance in the new Innovative Technolgy Program.

KDOT says all transportation modes and technologies are eligible and non-governmental applications will also be considered.

“As a leader in UAS, it’s important that we implement new technologies safely. Citizens at Local Consult meetings across the state last year stressed the need for technology opportunities to better position Kansas for the future,” said Secretary Julie Lorenz. “This program will help both rural and urban areas of the state improve the transportation system.” 

KDOT says it will hold an informational webinar about the program on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 10:30 a.m.

GM ‘Came Out Swinging’ Against Tesla With Its Electric-Vehicle Technology

General Motors
has big electric-vehicle ambitions, and Wall Street appears to be impressed.

“GM comes out swinging against Tesla,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a Wednesday evening research report, following the company’s electric-vehicle technology presentation near Detroit earlier in the day.

Ives covers
(ticker: TSLA) stock but not General Motors (GM). He was interested in what the state of EV technology is at a traditional auto maker that predominantly builds gasoline-powered vehicles. “We believe the event was a clear shot across the bow against [Elon] Musk and Tesla, which continues to lead the EV landscape by a clear margin.”

Even though Ives thinks Tesla is in the lead, he said Musk’s company has to take GM “seriously in this EV arms race.”
